Misrepresentation

Are there existing laws that prevent a public official from misrepresenting information to the public?  Do laws exist which protect the American public from officials who purposely and intentionally misrepresent information to the people they represent?  Have we elected used car salesmen to represent our interests in Washington?  Is this a case of  "public beware" of officials that barrage our senses in a way that cause us to stumble and ultimately fall prey to wild-eyed, semi-drunken officials who have their own interests at heart and who bludgeon the public with an agenda that has nothing to do with the issues important to the American public?
